Carolynne Ruffle, Managing Director & Lead Consultant

Carolynne RuffleCarolynne has many years experience in providing support and practical analysis in compensation and benefits. She was employed in the finance sector in London as a Remuneration Specialist for a US Investment Bank before moving into consultancy where she has managed the well-respected City Pay & Benefits surveys for over 10 years, before securing the business in a management buyout from PricewaterhouseCoopers in 2005.

In addition to the management of salary and benefits surveys and publication of their findings, Carolynne advises Remuneration or Senior Management Committees, Human Resources and Compensation & Benefits professionals on all aspects of remuneration, job evaluation and grading, pay policy & practice. Carolynne believes that the expertise and flexibility City Pay Associates can bring to a project means that we best meet our client’s needs for market pay data and advice.

Peter Bathmaker, Lead Consultant

Peter BathmakerPeter worked initially as a line manager in the railway and oil manufacturing businesses before becoming an industrial relations specialist and, from there, a human resources management specialist in Royal Dutch Shell. He worked for Shell in the UK and Netherlands, Australia, Thailand, Gabon and Syria and was HR Director of Shell Chemicals UK Ltd. From Shell he moved into the retail industry as Group HR Director in the retail and sports clothing industries before moving into consultancy as Principal in PricewaterhouseCoopers’ executive compensation practice.

As an organisation specialist working with international organisations, companies in the chemical and mining industries, public bodies and universities on the analysis and measurement of jobs and organisations to align structure with corporate objectives; identifying the capabilities, skills and knowledge needed in people for the organisation to perform effectively.

As a reward specialist he has worked with many clients building reward structures that are consistent with business culture and objectives. He has considerable experience in measuring work and jobs, particularly at senior level and was head of job evaluation for Shell. In the management of personnel records and administration systems he implemented one of the largest international databases in the world.

Peter has built a broad and deep understanding of the strategic relationship between employers and their employees, particularly how they best work together, the relationship between job responsibilities, motivations, abilities and the needs of the business. He has developed an approach to HR’s strategic role in contributing to the creation of business value, and has designed and developed a number of widely applicable tools. His methodology is to take ‘hard’ approaches to these ‘soft’ subjects to make them tractable and manageable.

Karen Overton, Lead Consultant

Karen OvertonKaren has wide ranging experience as an HR professional, both generalist and specialist, in a number of industries including IT, professional services (surveying and property), retail, financial services and the public sector.  Since 2001 she has been a consultant specialising in issues of human resources management, compensation and benefits, terms and conditions of employment and change management.  Karen has advised Remuneration Committees, public limited companies, mutually owned societies, charities and private bodies on aspects of remuneration, incentives, benefits and their relationship to corporate HR strategy, business objectives and organisation culture.

We have worked with this medium sized bank for many years providing salary benchmarking data, market information and policy advice to support annual pay reviews, promotion and recruitment activities. We also provide market information and advice on employee benefits with particular focus on the London market.
